Maui Brewing Co.'s beers on the sand in Hawaii

When we last visited the Maui Brewing Co.'s brew pub in Lahaina, we were thrilled to hear this small company was making plans to package and sell their handcrafted product on the open market. Visitors to Hawaii have long enjoyed this microbrew's quality, but now it is available off the island. Currently, these brews are only found in Hawaii, California and Japan, but look for the distribution pipeline to grow in the coming years.

The first three flavors to be offered are Big Swell IPA, Bikini Blonde Lager and CoCoNut Porter. The Big Swell IPA is an interesting, full-bodied pale ale with creamy notes and a slightly bitter finish—and pairs well with spicy food. The Bikini Blonde Lager combines German hops and barley, which makes for a malty taste similar to mass produced lagers on the market. Finally, the CoCoNut Porter is a robust offering flavored with—you guessed it—hand-toasted coconut. Its coffee and chocolate aroma adds to the silky balance, creating a unique taste.

Each of the beers is featured in cans only, which are becoming the packaging of choice for smaller breweries to maintain quality, as well as for environmental reasons. Maui Brewing Co.'s products are currently making the rounds on the beer competition circuit and faring very well against other microbreweries nationwide. But our favorite place to enjoy it is at their home on Maui.
