Immer's Wine Buying Guide for Everyone
Master
sommelier Andrea Immer recognizes that the general American
public is still somewhat befuddled when it comes to buying
wine for everyday use. Hence she has created a wine buying
guide "to focus on the criteria real-world people care
about most: taste, value for money, and the buying and serving
context ("Is this a good wine to give as a gift?")
She's compiled a list of more than 400 top-selling wines
across the country, all rated on a scale of 0-30 by a panel
of consumers as well as retailers and restaurant buyers
to create a user-friendly little book that is reminiscent
of a restaurant guide of the same format. Aside from the
listings with prices, value etc. we found Immer's own selections
especially appealing, such as "The Top 50 Wines You're
Not Drinking," which lists, for instance, the Kendall-Jackson
Great Estates Monterey Chardonnay. It was also fun to see
how Beaulieu Vineyard rated --- our frequent choice when
we are in a, let's say, not-so-good supermarket. Ergo: If
you're in favor of a democratic approach to wine, this is
the book for you.
