Acorn Winery

Gathering grapes at Acorn Winery in the Russian River Valley

Profile: Although Acorn has been around only since 1990, the reputation of its vineyard site precedes it by nearly 150 years. As a result, the winery relies on the fine fruit of its estate-grown grapes to dictate the fruit-forward style of its wines. Named in honor of the site's prolific oaks, Acorn likens itself to the tiny nut in size, (about 2,000 cases per year), and resilience.

Tasting Notes: Old grape, new wine — sort of. Due to recent plantings in California we are able to experience the Tuscan grape right here in the U.S. Great in blends, but nice on its own, we might be seeing more and more of it. Here is a fine example albeit from 50-year-old vines in the Russian River Valley. Complexity of aromas and taste have been boosted by the addition of minute quantities of Canaiolo Nero and Mammolo Toscano. This wine is as elegant as it is fragrant and balanced. A long finish with slight smokiness adds a nice dimension. Because of the floral tones and subtle character, we would pair it with fish and light meats. At this price, we had nothing to complain about. (Date tasted 01/23/04)
