THE SPIRIT OF BERMUDA
Gosling's Black Seal Bermuda Black Rum

Turns out the islands famous for their shorts, grass and mysterious Triangle have something else going for them: rum. The Gosling family has been producing it in Hamilton, the capital, for seven generations, making it the country's oldest business house. With its three rums, Gosling's is the largest exporter of a Bermuda-made product.

Perhaps their best-known rum, Black Seal, was developed in 1863 and was originally only available on draft poured from barrels. During World War I, Gosling’s started selling black rum in recycled Champagne bottles sealed with cork and black wax. There was such a demand for these “Black Seal” bottles that the name stuck. The cute seal logo came later.

The rum itself is smooth and flavorful, with an aroma reminiscent of brown sugar. We enjoyed it on the rocks and in a Dark’n Stormy, Bermuda’s national drink. Suddenly, a Dark 'n Stormy night in Bermuda sounds pretty good.
