To
celebrate the 40th anniversary of Pink Panther, Surrey Books
has released Pink Panther Cocktail Party, a cocktail
guide featuring retro drawings of America’s most famous
pink cat and the bumbling Inspector Clouseau. Retro pop
artist Shag, also known as Josh Agle, presents his colorful
illustrations for the guide, which comes with a CD containing
an animated music video and various versions of Henri Mancini’s
memorable theme song. Adam Rocke, author of several other
drink guides, including Shag’s Around the World
in 80 Drinks and Tiki Drinks, provides the
drink menu for this book.
Like
most other guides, this book contains the standard guidelines
for serving cocktails, including tips for stocking the bar,
glass types, liquor types and of course, drink recipes.
If the bright purple and turquoise pictures aren’t
enough to fulfill your Pink Panther fetish, the guide provides
drink recipes with names like “Panther’s Tail”
and “Inspector Dreyfus,” and are even divided
into categories like “Straight Up Pink” and
“Swank Panther.” Overall, this book makes a
fun gift for any cocktail lover, but its appeal is slightly
childish. The cutesy and indulgently pink pages are filled
with mostly “girly” drinks, the kind made with
sweet liqueurs and sugary fruit juices, and its Pink Panther
theme is a little over the top at times. Still, interesting
concoctions like the “Pink Panther Original”
and “Clouseau” could make it worth the price.
Pink Panther Cocktail Party, Surrey Books, $16.95.
