Simplicity
is the overarching theme of this new release by wine writer Anthony
Dias Blue. He and his team of writers managed to cram a world’s
worth of information into a small 357-page guide, complete with
tips on tasting, food pairing and stemware selection. The majority
of the book is a wide-ranging list of wineries from around the
world, including France, Latin America, Australia, Israel and
even China. But despite being a world guide on wine, Blue makes
sure to focus heavily on the area where most Americans get their
wine: the United States. His extensive coverage of California
wineries (which, incidentally, is the first section of the winery
listings) should impress many American wine enthusiasts.
The
small blurbs under each listing are descriptive enough to give
a general idea of the winery, and small icons next to its name
indicate whether it is an established or up-an-coming winery.
Blue also marks wineries that produce value wines and lists suggested
wines from each area. Each item also includes a website (for wineries
that do have websites), but the lack of addresses, phone numbers
and maps unfortunately make this pocket guide a poor traveling
companion. Instead, take it with you on your next trip to the
wine shop as an easy buying guide.
