TASTING NOTES

Fieldbrook

1997 Medallion
Varietal/Style: Bordeaux Blend
Origin: Trinity County, CA
Vintage:
1997
Winemaker: Robert Hodgson
Rating: 13/20
Retail Price: $20

Tasting Notes: This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc has great depth, marred only by an unfortunate tickle of pepper on the finish. Aromas and flavors of this medium weight wine are full of dark fruits like blackberries and cherries. Surprisingly, it is the Cabernet Franc that dominates flavor and style. Although it lacks the power of top end American Cabernet blends, the wine is undeniably a good buy at $20. (Date tasted 08/26/00)

Profile: A tiny winery with an unusual address, (just outside Arcata, California,) Fieldbrook produces about 1,000 cases per year. Essentially a one-man operation, owner/winemaker and former oceanography professor Bob Hodgson has no plans to expand. Instead, he'll focus on his formula for success, reflected in his staggering number of wine competition medals.
