TASTING NOTES

Haywood Estate

1997 Morning Sun Zinfandel
Varietal/Style: Zinfandel
Origin: Sonoma Valley, CA
Vintage:
1997
Winemaker: Judy Matulich-Weitz
Rating: 15/20
Retail Price: $28.95

Tasting Notes: This is one of the finest Zinfandels we've recently tasted. Medium to full in body, the wine is packed full of jammy fruit flavors while maintaining a delicate balance of acidity. Aromas reminiscent of a smokehouse add a level of complexity not found in higher-alcohol Zins. The finish may be its least remarkable point, yet it lingers with a hint of clove and spice. 1997 Rocky Terrace Zinfandel
Varietal/Style: Zinfandel
Origin: Sonoma Valley, CA
Vintage:
1997
Winemaker: Judy Matulich-Weitz
Rating: 14/20
Retail Price: $35

Tasting Notes: A fine example of Sonoma fruit, this Zin tastes of the dusty and mineral characteristics from its unique hillside origin. Rich in the mouth with a good balance of acid, its finish lingers long with the flavor of vanilla. Although it's burdened by a hefty price tag, this wine is unquestionably well made, complex and completely unique. (Date tasted 08/26/00)

Profile: Peter Haywood began searching for vineyard property in 1973. Little did he know that his first vineyard, outside the town of Sonoma, had the potential for producing some of Sonoma County's finest Zinfandels. As the winery has grown, Haywood's Zinfandels continue to receive national praise. Today, Haywood produces three styles of Zin: Los Chamizal, Rocky Terrace and Morning Sun.
