TASTING NOTES

Makor

1998 Carignan
Varietal/Style: Carignan
Origin: Paso Robles, CA
Vintage:
1998
Winemaker: Jim Adelman
Rating: 12/20
Retail Price: $15

Tasting Notes: How often do you find a wine made from one hundred percent Carignan? Like nothing we've ever tasted before, Makor's wine offers forward strawberry flavors, an enjoyably light body and an odd, barnyardy nose -- which goes away after considerable time. Adleman prides himself in offering a mature wine -- being immature himself as the back label indicates -- and the origin of the barrels: from the Taransaud area of France. We've certainly had fun trying to figure out were this gaseous nose comes from! Perhaps, from the nature of this strong flavored Spanish grape or the moss that grows on the redwoods next to the vineyards, or the immature staff just forgot to wash the bottles. Anyway, an unusual offering and something different. (Date tasted 08/26/00)

Profile: This one-man show produced and performed by Jim Adelman, general manager for Au Bon Climat, began in 1991 as little more than a whim with three barrels of Pinot Blanc. Since that time, Makor has expanded to include such styles as Zinfandel and Carignan, but Adelman still has a passion for that Pinot Blanc.
