TASTING NOTES

Pacific Star

1996 Charbono
Varietal/Style: Charbono
Origin: Mendocino County, CA
Vintage:
1996
Winemaker: Sally Ottoson
Rating: 13/20
Retail Price: $28

Tasting Notes: Although it is a 1996, this wine still has room to grow and evolve. A no-holds-barred effort from one of the world leaders in Charbono - a dying breed, we fear - it offers a wild ride of ripe blackberry, currant and eucalyptus flavors and aromas. The finish is still a little rough; we look forward to watching it mellow out with time. (Date tasted 08/26/00)

Profile: The westernmost winery in the United States, Pacific Star holds a precarious, ocean-side perch just north of Fort Bragg, California. Run by a woman winemaker Sally Ottoson, the winery produces styles from the unique to the mundane, Petit Syrah to Cabernet Sauvignon.
