TASTING NOTES

Saucelito Canyon

1997 Zinfandel-Arroyo Grande Valley
Varietal/Style: Zinfandel
Origin: Arroyo Grande Valley
Vintage: 1997
Winemaker: Bill Greenough
Rating: 14/20
Retail Price: $20

Tasting Notes: This wine's deep purple color mirrors its nose of plum and spice. Bold, dark fruit flavors lead to an intense finish. With dusty tannins and an influence of oak and vanilla, this wine is ready to drink now or cellar for years to come. (Date tasted: 03/03/2000)

Profile: History runs deep in Saucelito Canyon. This winery holds San Luis Opispo County's oldest Zinfandel vineyard, first planted by Englishman Henry Ditmas in 1879. When present owners Nancy and Bill Greenough purchased the vineyard from Ditmas granddaughters in 1974, it took the talent and dedication of a skilled farmer and winemaker like Bill Greenough to nurse the land back to a thriving state. Today the winery produces about 2,000 cases of what is possibly the Central Coast's finest Zinfandel as well as small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon from their Arroyo Grande Valley vineyards.
