TASTING NOTES

L'Aventure

1998 Optimus
Varietal/Style: Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon & Zinfandel blend
Origin: Paso Robles, CA
Vintage:
1998
Winemaker: Stephane Asseo
Rating: 14/20
Retail Price: $55

Tasting Notes: This complex blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel really packs a lot. From its forward flavors of dark fruits and burnt caramel to its high alcohol percentage, this is a wine with spirit. Although only a 1998, this wine is ready to drink now. Don't hold it too long or its backbone of soft tannins will surely crumble. (Date tasted 11/5/00)

Profile: When French oenologist Stephane Asseo left his homeland to prospect for California "gold," what could he have possibly named his New World winery but, "The Adventure"? In the tradition of his winemaking family back in Bordeaux, Asseo's grapes are all custom-crushed, and French is the only oak used. Growing and evolving with time and technology, L'Aventure's young vineyards will soon be at maturity and the winery's website will bring its Franco-Californian wines to the world.
