TASTING NOTES

Lang & Reed

1998 Premier Etage Cabernet Franc
Varietal/Style: Cabernet Franc
Origin:
Napa Valley
Vintage:
1998
Winemaker: John Skupny
Rating: 14/20
Retail Price: $30

Tasting Notes: This fleshy, full-flavored wine boasts that blood-red color characteristic of 100 percent Cab Franc wines. Aromas are reminiscent of a walk in the forest: pine needles, dried grass and crushed violets. Burnt caramel flavors and velvet tannins predominate in the mouth. The wine's power and intensity may be its fatal flaws. A little too high in alcohol and perhaps a bit too bold in flavor, it lacks the elegant note of more food-friendly styles. (Date tasted 8/17/01)

Profile: Founded in 1996 by John Skupny and his wife Tracey, Lang and Reed is a premiere producer of Napa Valley Cabernet Franc. Established to explore the undervalued varietal's potential in America's most popular region, the winery is known for two styles, Lang and Reed and Premier Etage. Ever-evolving, the winery is now experimenting with a dry rosé made from 100 percent Cab Franc.
