TASTING NOTES

Monte Xanic

1996 Cabernet Sauvignon y Merlot
Varietal/Style: Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot
Origin:
Guadalupe Valley
Vintage:
1996
Winemaker: Hans Backhoff
Rating: 13/20
Retail Price: $15
Tasting Notes: Despite a slightly odd nose like wet paper and dried flowers, we like this wine for its old-vine character fruit flavors—rich, chocolaty and prune-like. Nicely balanced, its dry and slightly bitter finish is followed by a note of vanilla and, unfortunately, a bit of an iodine aftertaste. Despite some bumps and ridges, this is a distinct wine with a fine backbone of tannin and a blend to make the Baja proud. (Date tasted 01/28/01)

Profile:
A Mexican producer with a Bordeaux varietal program, this is one of the more interesting wineries we've recently encountered. Located in the Northeastern Baja, the winery is built on a hillside to take full advantage of the Guadalupe Valley views. Founded in 1987, it is one of the region's youngest and most successful estates, an incredible achievement, considering the masterminds behind this production are a boat repairing escapee from Mexico City and a hobby winemaker from Ensenada.
