TASTING NOTES

Pezzi King Vineyards

1998 Old Vines Zinfandel
Varietal/Style: Zinfandel
Origin: Dry Creek Valley, CA
Vintage:
1998
Winemaker: Tim Crowe
Rating: 13/20
Retail Price: $23

Tasting Notes: Although Pezzi King is best known for Zinfandel, this is the winery's first attempt at using old vine fruit. Soft in the mouth and light on tannins, its tart cherry flavors are atypical of an old vine wine. Although its an exceedingly easy drinker, this wine lacks the character we had hoped for from an old-vine style. (Date tasted 11/5/00)

Profile: Founded in 1993, this family-owned operation in the Dry Creek Valley is already earning its place among western Sonoma County's most interesting red producers. In taking over the old Stemmler winery facilities, Pezzi King has expanded to an annual production of around 20,000 cases, which includes both larger releases of its more popular Cabernets and Zinfandels, as well as smaller, more experimental releases, including the first attempt at an old-vine style, released in August 2000.
