TASTING NOTES

Sagelands

1998 Merlot
Varietal/Style: 88 percent Merlot, 11 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 1 percent Cabernet Franc
Origin: Columbia Valley, WA
Vintage:
1998
Winemaker: Kevin Mott
Rating: 14/20
Retail Price: $16

Tasting Notes: Murky, deep, dark and purple, this wine is textbook Merlot. The nose is subtle and slightly herbal, the mouthfeel is fleshy and the flavors are fruit-forward. The finish falls off a bit too fast, but it does bring out a pleasing cocoa component. Soft, smooth, approachable, this is easily a bottle anyone could enjoy, however, few will find it a favorite. (Date tasted 01/28/01)

Profile: As the Chalone Wine Group's second premium winery in Washington State, Sagelands enjoys the experience of trial and error created by its predecessor, Canoe Ridge Vineyard. Named in honor of the sage prolific in Washington's Yakima Valley, the winery's philosophy reflects this interest in and dedication to the concept of terroir. Sagelands proclaims devotion to the production of quality Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon that reflect the character of the Washington soil and climates.
