TASTING NOTES

Tantara

Pinot Blanc
Varietal/Style: Pinot Blanc
Origin: Arroyo Grande Valley
Vintage: 1998
Winemaker: Jeffrey Fink & Bill Cates
Rating: 13/20
Retail Price: $15

Tasting Notes: This wine's glowing, golden hue and lush, tropical nose hint at good things to come. Although it is heavily oaked, the wine's full, fruit flavors dominate in the mouth and a hint of vanilla rounds out the toasty finish. Stylistically, it resembles a full-bodied Chardonnay more than its true varietal character, but no matter the style, it is inarguably a solid, well-made wine. (Date tasted: 06/10/00)

Pinot Noir Bien Nacido Vineyard
Varietal/Style: Pinot Noir
Origin: Santa Maria Valley
Vintage: 1998
Winemaker: Jeffrey Fink & Bill Cates
Rating: 13/20
Retail Price: $35

Tasting Notes: Extracted from old vine fruit in Tantara’s Bien Nacido vineyard, this wine exhibits the typical cherry character of a Central Coast Pinot. The wine’s best feature is the nose of cinnamon, cloves and cola, although the medium-bodied, ripe fruit flavors make it pleasant drinking at its early age. (Date tasted: 03/03/00)

1998 Sangiovese
Varietal/Style: Sangiovese
Origin: Paso Robles
Vintage: 1998
Winemaker: Jeffrey Fink & Bill Cates
Rating: 13/20
Retail Price: $15

Tasting Notes: This unfiltered, 100% Sangiovese makes a good mate for Mediterranean cuisine. Light in body and color, the wine offers a silky mouth-feel with hints of vanilla. Soft tannins and simple, cherry flavors create an extremely approachable style. (Date tasted: 03/03/00)

Profile: One of Santa Barbara County’s newest wineries, Tantara was created by long-time friends Jeffrey Fink, an architect by trade, and Bill Cates, a writer, with a dedication to producing the kind of top quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay for which the Central Coast is known. With their new location in the Bien Nacito Vineyard, the winery has certainly set itself up for success, if the work of their nearest neighbor, highly regarded Au Bon Climat, is any measure. Christened after a horse formerly owned by Cates, Tantara strives to symbolize the elegance, grace, power and longevity of its namesake.
