Treana Winery Profile

Treana Wines Tasting Notes and Reviews

Their name symbolizes a "trinity of natural elements"—the sun, sea and soil—which make for the prime grape growing conditions of the Central Coast region. At Treana, located in the Paso Robles Appelation, this trinity blends hot summer days, night ocean breezes and limestone soil to produce a foundation for the winery's success: top-quality Rhône and Bordeaux varietal grapes. The Treana team is well aware that great fruit alone does not create great wine. That's why, at this family owned winery, over twenty years of winemaking tradition combine with the expertise of winemaker Chris Phelps, a graduate of the University of California at Davis' enology program and a student of France's University of Bordeaux, goes into every bottle. In addition to producing both red and white table wines, the Hope family offers a line of wines available only at their Paso Robles tasting room. Masters of hospitality, the family also offers accommodation at their bed and breakfast, the Arbor Inn, located on the vineyard property.

Treana Wines We've Tasted:

Proprietary Red Table Wine
Varietal/Style: Meritage
Origin: Paso Robles
Vintage: 2006
Winemaker: Austin Hope
Rating: 13.5/20
Retail Price: $50

Tasting Notes: Benefitting from the year's relatively short harvest in Paso Robles (as many varieties reached ripeness at the same time), this blend exhibits increased intensity and richer dark berry flavors. Composed of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Syrah, this red wine displays elegant tannins with structure and depth. A pleasing nose of fruit and spice are complemented by flavors of mocha, tobacco and toasty oak. It will age beautifully over the next decade. (Date tasted: 12/29/09)

Proprietary Red Table Wine
Varietal/Style: Meritage
Origin: Paso Robles
Vintage: 1997
Winemaker: Chris Phelps
Rating: 13/20
Retail Price: $32

Tasting Notes: Made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Sangiovese and Petit Sirah, it is no surprise that this 1997 offers a gorgeous, deep purple hue. The spicy nose alludes to the wine's blackberry and cassis flavors. A rich, full body gives way to the long and complex finish with hints of coffee, cocoa and anise. We feel this wine easily ranks among the top meritage blends coming from the Central Coast. (Date tasted: 03/03/00)
