TASTING NOTES

Valhalla Vineyards

1998 Götterdämmerung
Varietal/Style: Cabernet Franc
& Merlot blend

Origin: Virginia
Vintage:
1998
Winemaker: Jim Vascik
Rating: 14/20
Retail Price: $24

Tasting Notes: A wonderful find for the price, there's no question why this wine is sweeping competitions across the East Coast. Its earthy nose gives a sense of its origin, leading to the surprise of full, forward, fresh fruit on the palate. A raw, wild and bohemian wine - what else would you expect from a Virginian winemaker? (Date tasted 11/5/00)

Profile: Yes, Virginia, you do make some fine wines. And near the top of the state's achievers would have to be this little winery from Roanoke. Run by the husband-and-wife team of Jim and Debra Vascik, both the winery's granite soil-grown Syrah and Götterdämmerung, the Cheval Blanc-style blend, have quickly become benchmark wines for the East Coast.
